I have a smartphone and use enough to handle my email when I’m traveling.

Since March 26th, I cannot access my mail server, which has the same IP address that ODF Alliance (www.odfalliance.org) website. I’ve analyzed the problem and found that there is a drop of IP packages on a particular router outside Brazil that prevents my access to the ODF Alliance website and also and my mail server.

I had a similar problem during the month of March and half of April with my broadband provider (again an IP package drop on a router in U.S.), and after many phone calls to the technical support of my provider, they finally managed a way to solv it (at least for now).

I’ve contacted my Mobile Phone Service Operator (Claro) but they told me that this is not “their problem” and that they will not take any measure (I came to say that I would cancel my phone and they told me “OK, be my guess”… competence, right ? - BTW, this is “Customer Care” “Best Practices” on Brazilian Telecommunications companies).

I am writing this here because I’ve showed the problem to several friends and found that those with cell phones or smartphones from CLARO in Sao Paulo are also unable to access the ODF Alliance website. Access to any other site is possible.

I would like to ask the readers of my blog, the help to test (with your cell phone) the access to the ODF Alliance (www.odfalliance.org) website and post a comment here with your location and whether or not you’re able to access ODF Alliance website. This is necessary in order to see whether it is a problem unique to Jomar (unlucky guy, ok ?) or is it an action that affects all users of Claro of São Paulo.

If the second alternative is true (and I’m not so unlucky ), I will take the appropriate court measures.

I count on the help of you all (for testing and for the dissemination of this post).

Tenho um smartphone e uso bastante para tratar meus e-mails quando estou viajando.

Desde o dia 26 de Março, não consigo mais acessar meu servidor de e-mail, que por acaso está no mesmo endereço IP que o site da ODF Alliance (www.odfalliance.org). Depurei o problema (já dei aula de gerenciamento de redes, e portanto entendo do assunto) e constatei que existe um drop de pacotes em um determinado roteador fora do Brasil que impede que eu acesse o site da ODF Alliance e o meu servidor de e-mail.

Tive um problema idêntico durante o mês de Março e metade do mês de Abril com meu provedor de banda larga (novamente um drop de pacotes em um roteador nos EUA), e depois de inúmeros chamados técnicos o provedor acabou intercedendo e resolveu meu problema de forma definitiva (por enquanto).

Já tentei contatar a Claro mas eles me dizem que o problema não é deles e que não vão tomar providência alguma (cheguei a dizer que ia cancelar meu celular e eles me disseram que tudo bem… competência, né ?).

Estou escrevendo isso aqui, pois mostrei o problema a vários amigos e descobri que os que têm celulares ou smartphones da Claro de São Paulo também não conseguem acessar o site da ODF Alliance. O acesso a qualquer outro site é possível.

Gostaria de pedir aos leitores do meu blog uma ajuda para testar (com o seu celular) o acesso ao site da ODF Alliance (www.odfalliance.org) e postar nos comentários a sua localidade e se acessam ou não. Isto é necessário para que se possa constatar se é um problema exclusivo do Jomar (azarado mesmo) ou se é alguma ação que afeta todos os usuários da Claro de São Paulo.

Se a segunda alternativa for verdadeira, irei tomar as providências judiciais cabíveis.

Conto com a ajuda de todos (para o teste e para a divulgação deste post).

Quando fui imprimir a declaração, descobri que poderia salvar o documento (clicando no ícone de um disquete, no canto superior esquerdo da tela).

Para minha surpresa, estava a extensão .ODT: Gravei minha declaração para backup em ODF !!!

Realmente o ODF está em lugares nunca imaginados antes (ou alguém aí imaginou encontrar ODF no Imposto de Renda ?).

PS.: Se um dia minha filha que tem 4 anos me perguntar o que é um disquete, como posso explicar a ela ? Será que este ícone ainda faz algum sentido ?

I am very encouraged by this new challenge and impressed with the workload. I was already up to lose “my shape” after a final decision about OpenXML in Brazil, but the agitation in OASIS is similar to that we had in Brazil to review OpenXML.

At the TC, we exchange, on average, 10 messages a day, and periodic conf-calls, with participation of people all around the world (literally). Indeed, one of the last discussions was about the time of calls, as at a certain time, it is morning for one member, lunch-time for another and night and for a third…

Among other issues that I have interest, I want to contribute to the support of digital signatures in ODF 1.2 (obviously compatible with ICP-Brazil). This was the issue that put me in contact with the committee and that resulted in an invitation for me to join in the group.

Now we can really say that Brazil is no longer in the “supporting role” on international IT standards field, and based on my commitment and animation, we’re gonna make a good job (I hope so ).

I’m also available to everyone, that in any way, want to contribute with the development of ODF, or who has any doubt about its development. For those who want to follow the work, the discussion list used by us is available to public view (post is only allowed to members) and can be accessed here.

After the desert, I’ve finally found the OASIS ! Can someone bring me a glass of water, please

Estou muito animado com este novo desafio e impressionado com o volume de trabalho. Eu já estava até perdendo a forma depois da decisão final do Brasil sobre o OpenXML, mas a agitação no OASIS é semelhante a que tivemos no Brasil para analisar o OpenXML.

São trocados em média 10 mensagens por dia, e realizadas conf-calls periódicas, com participação de gente do mundo todo (literalmente). Aliás, uma das últimas discussões foi sobre o horário dos calls, pois se é manhã para um, é horário de almoço para outro e madrugada para um terceiro…

Entre outros assuntos que tenho interesse, pretendo contribuir com o grupo no suporte a assinatura digital no ODF 1.2 (obviamente compatível com ICP-Brasil). Este foi o assunto que me colocou em contato com o comitê e que resultou em um convite para que eu participasse do grupo.

Agora podemos realmente afirmar que o Brasil deixa de ser coadjuvante no cenário internacional de normas de TI, e se depender do meu comprometimento e animação, vamos vazer bonito novamente.

Me coloco desde já a disposição de todos que de alguma forma gostariam de contribuir com o desenvolvimento do ODF, ou que tem qualquer dúvida sobre seu desenvolvimento. Depois do deserto, finalmente chego ao OASIS !!! E vamos camelar de novo

A year ago, when I were at FISL 8.0, I walked the corridors talking about ODF to everyone I knew and the vast majority of people only had a slight idea of what was ODF. At that time, I made a small participation in a Cezar Taurion’s presentation to talk about ODF and in a room with about 200 people, asked who knew the ODF: Between ten and twenty people raised their hands.

This year, in my presentation about ODF (with approximately 200 people), repeating the same question and I was very happy to see that only some 20 guys didn’t raised their hands. Vitório Furusho (a friend from CELEPAR, the governmental IT company of Paraná State), also made an excellent presentation about ODF, focusing the law approved in Paraná. His speech also had room full.

I also enjoyed walking through FISL’s corridors and find various participants chatting about ODF. Moreover, when I finished my presentation, I take part of a chat with several people, mostly young people between 17 and 22 years and something really surprised me.

At some moment of conversation, one of the participants asked (innocently): “And now that the OpenXML was approved in ISO, what happens?”

Before I could respond, there was a general and huge laugh among all other colleagues and to my surprise, the youngest of them simply said: “Man, you really believe in ISO? They are a complete joke… “. He was immediately supported by others (and I wasn’t even able to respond, given the “joke climate” that prevailed).

The lesson that I take out of this is that this boy, with his 17 years old should not be the only one in his generation who thinks so and therefore, for the next 80 or 90 years I think there will be many people in Brazil and worldwide that will be able to speak something like that about ISO (and with the power of  viral communication that they have, the things will be really hard to our friends from Geneva… so resolved ).

To crown the event, I discovered on the last day that one of the challenges of FISL’s “programming arena” (yes, a fish bowl with several hackers/nerds inside writing code 10 hours per day during 3 days) was implementing an ODF viewer to Maemo platform. In a few hours a group of developers managed to develop the viewer. The first information that I have on the subject can be found here, but I’m waiting a complete article from the arena organizers to post here in the coming days.

Announcements regarding the adoption and usage of ODF were made during the event and I really hope that in FISL 10, we can all celebrate together with the 10 years of event (and with the 10 thousand people that are expected there) the adoption of ODF as “the fact standard” in Brazilian market. Who knows if in the video-conference with the astronauts of the orbital station, planned for the closure ceremony of FISL 10, we can exchange an ODF document with them?

I would also like to thank again all those who organized the FISL and all participants of the event, especially the readers of my blog, that stopped me to chat at FISL. You managed a way to recharge my batteries to face another year of work in defence of the ODF: Thank you very much

Finally, I heard from a colleague that his friend put a cool nickname at Campus Party, and I really feel that it will have more sense to be adopted as the codename (and slogan) for the FISL 10 (and here is my suggestion to FISL’s organisers):

FISL 10.0: WELCOME TO NERDSTOCK

Há um ano, quando participei do FISL 8.0, andava pelos corredores falando sobre o assunto para todos que conhecia e a grande maioria das pessoas tinha apenas uma leve noção do que era o ODF. Naquela oportunidade, fiz uma pequena participação em uma palestra do Cezar Taurion para falar sobre ODF e em uma sala com aproximadamente 200 pessoas, perguntei quem conhecia o ODF: Entre dez e vinte pessoas levantaram a mão.

Neste ano, na minha palestra sobre o tema (com aproximadamente 200 pessoas), repeti a mesma pergunta e fiquei muito feliz  ao constratar que apenas umas 20 não levantaram a mão.  O Vitório Furusho, da CELEPAR, também fez uma excelente palestra sobre o tema, com enfoque a Lei aprovada no Paraná. Sua palestra também contou com sala cheia.

Foi muito gratificante também andar pelos corredores do FISL e encontrar diversas rodas de bate papo sobre o ODF. Além disso, quando terminei minha palestra participei de uma destas rodas de bate papo com diversas pessoas, em sua maioria jovens entre 17 e 22 anos e algo me surpreendeu de verdade.

Em dado momento da conversa, um dos participantes perguntou (inocentemente): “E agora que o OpenXML foi aprovado na ISO, o que acontece ?”

Antes que eu pudesse responder, houve uma gargalhada geral entre os demais colegas e para minha surpresa, o mais novo deles simplesmente falou: “Cara, você acredita mesmo na ISO ? Aquilo é uma piada completa…”. Imediatamente foi apoiado pelos demais (acabou que eu nem precisei responder, dado o clima de piada que prevaleceu).

A lição que tiro disso é que este garoto, com seus 17 anos de idade, não deve ser o único em sua geração que pensa assim e por isso, pelos próximos 80 ou 90 anos creio que vai haver muita gente no Brasil e no mundo que vai poder falar coisa parecida sobre a ISO (e se imaginarmos o poder de comunicação viral que este pessoal possui, a coisa vai ficar difícil mesmo para nosso amigos de Genebra).

Para coroar o evento, descobri no último dia que um dos desafios da arena de programação do FISL era a implementação de um visualizador de ODF para a plataforma Maemo. Em algumas horas um grupo de desenvolvedores conseguiu desenvolver o visualizador. As primeiras informações que tenho sobre o tema podem ser encontradas aqui, mas estou aguardando um artigo completo dos organizadores da arena para publicar aqui nos próximos dias.

Anúncios sobre a adoção e utilização do ODF foram feitos durante o evento e realmente espero que no FISL 10, possamos todos comemorar junto com os 10 anos de evento (e com as 10 mil pessoas que se pretende colocar lá) a adoção do ODF como padrão de fato pelo mercado brasileiro. Quem sabe na vide-conferência com os astronautas da estação orbital, planejada para a cerimônia de encerramento, não possamos trocar com eles um documento em ODF ?

At the opening ceremony, I would like to highlight the speech of the Governor of the State of Paraná, Roberto Requião, who said that in 2005 he was at the FISL to give a good news to everyone, the signature (during the event) of the decree that opened the code for all the software developed in the government of Paraná to the entire community (and they still doing that today). Now, in 2007 he said he returns to the event to another excellent news: The Paraná is the first Brazilian state to adopt the ODF format to state’s documents. (More information about Paraná here, but Paraná is a state bigger than some European countries in terms of population and territory)

The photo below is a booklet that is distributed to all participants of the forum (included on the material received by every participant) and contains the text of the ODF adoption law in the state of Parana. The picture was taken from the cover of the booklet (and to me it says everything…)

Another thing that makes me happy is to see that the ODF is a common chat and conversations theme throughout the event. Last year I was in FISL and most of the people even knew precisely what is ODF.

I’ve also met many people who have told me that they are readers of this blog and it is a great pleasure talking to all of them live and tell the stories that I didn’t wrote (yet) here or clarify facts described in the blog. Speaking on you all, readers, I would like to say “thank you very much” for reading my blog. That motivates me to write more (eg now, all my friends are taking beers and I decided staying in the hotel, to work a bit and of course, write this post here). Thanks to you all, my blog registered more than 10,700 unique visits in last 30 days!

Na cerimônia de abertura, gostaria de destacar o discurso do Governador do Estado do Paraná, Roberto Requião, que disse que em 2005 esteve no FISL para dar uma excelente notícia a todos, a assinatura (no evento) do decreto que abria o código de todos os softwares desenvolvidos no Governo do Paraná para toda a comunidade (e é assim até hoje). Agora, em 2007 ele disse que volta ao evento para dar outra excelente notícia: O Paraná é o primeiro estado brasileiro a adotar o ODF como formato de documentos do estado. Terminou seu discurso aplaudido de pé.

Outra coisa que me deixa muito feliz é ver que o ODF é assunto de rodas de bate papo e conversas por todo o evento. No ano passado, estive no FISL e grande parte das pessoas sequer sabia com precisão o que é o ODF.

Encontrei ainda muitas pessoas que me disseram que são leitores deste blog e é um grande prazer conversar com todos eles e contar ao vivo as histórias que não escrevi (ainda) aqui ou esclarecer fatos descritos no blog. Falando em vocês leitores, gostaria de lhes agraceder de verdade por lerem o que escrevo. Isso me motiva a escrever mais ainda (por exemplo agora, a galera toda tá tomando cerveja e eu resolvi ficar no hotel, para trabalhar um pouco e claro, postar isso aqui).
